Translate InDesign from English to Portuguese

Whether you're targeting São Paulo or Lisbon, Portuguese InDesign documents need to be right. Accents, cedillas, tildes — the language has its quirks, and your fonts need to support them. IDML.ai handles the translation and character encoding so you don't have to worry about it.

Tips for English → Portuguese InDesign Translation

  • Portuguese uses ã, õ, ç, and various accented vowels — ensure full font support
  • Brazilian vs. European Portuguese have different spellings — AI defaults to Brazilian Portuguese
  • Text expansion is 15–25% — watch narrow columns and caption frames
  • Portuguese quotation conventions differ: « » or " " depending on region
  • If targeting Brazil specifically, consider reviewing words like "autocarro" vs "ônibus" — the AI uses the 1990 Orthographic Agreement but some terms still differ

What to Expect: English to Portuguese Text Length

Portuguese adds about 15–25% to your text length — similar to Spanish, and for the same reasons. Brazilian Portuguese tends to run slightly shorter than European Portuguese in practice, though the difference is small. What does matter: Portuguese has a rich set of nasal vowels (ã, õ) and accented characters that require full Latin Extended font support. If you've used a narrow sans-serif that only covers basic Latin, you'll see placeholder boxes where ã and ç should be.

Tip: After translation, check for overset text in InDesign — it appears as a small red + icon on the bottom-right of a text frame. Click the icon to flow the text or resize the frame.
